Some writers I’ve met in the recent years around here all seem to be writing
thrillers. And then, when I ask “What is your primary and sub-genre?” They would
be lost. Dear new writer, there are many different genres of screenplays to
write. Each genre is unique in the types of stories they tell, their character,
setting, the way they are written and their theme. Learning the intricacies of
each genre will help you become a more balanced screenwriter.
So, let me ask you, do you know the genre you’re working in? Are you in
touch with the genre? Will it meet audience expectations and transcend them?
To write a screenplay or a novel, you must master the genre you’re
working in. One best way of mastering genre is to take a masterclass, watch movies,
read scripts and novels in the genres you’re working in.
To get started, master the following list of 10 genres:
Thriller: Suspense stories, often involving crime
Mystery: a variation on the crime genre where the opponent is unknown
for much of the story (a “who done it”)
Drama: stories about interpersonal, social, and historical issues.
Crime: stories about private eyes and detectives.
Epic: longer movies often are combining several genres.
Horror: stories about the occult, supernatural, and monsters.
Gangster: a variation on the crime genre where the focus is on organized
crime.
Cop: a variation on crime genre where the focus is on the world cops.
Love: stories about romance.
Comedy: stories that make you laugh; they range from zany slapstick to sophisticated
slices of life
The story I’m currently working on revolves around three genres. My
primary genre is a thriller, and my sub-genres; mystery, crime and drama.
