Grab the Reader

When starting Act one of your script or novel, the first scene/chapter should be brilliant. Establish your character and his or her conflict in the first few minutes of your novel or script. Make sure the words are good enough to grab the reader and hold him or her.

The first scene/chapter of your script or novel would determine whether the reader goes to read more or trash your work.

This is no joke! Such things actually do happen. Many years ago on the blog Authors’ Curtilage, an author contacted me to interview her for her novel and to promote the book on the blog. By the time I read the first chapter and managed to read the second, I was totally put off. The book was poorly written, and I’m not talking about the concept of a book that is fresh and not resonating with the reader. I mean, the storyline didn’t connect. The characters were confusing. The writer was just all over the place. So, I turned down spotlighting the book on the blog.

I had a similar experience with a scriptwriter and an author working on his debut novel, and if I wasn’t reading their work to provide them note for subsequent development, I would have put aside their manuscripts.

A competition judge said this about one of my film scripts:

“The story is an intriguing crime drama that keeps the reader guessing as the story unfolds. Rife with action and suspense, the piece is dark and original.”

This is the feedback I got when one of my novels got critiqued:

“The overall idea of the book is very interesting. I liked the parallel stories and how they overlapped and developed. I also enjoyed much about your style of writing. You use many vivid descriptions and really paint a clear picture of some of the places and people. I liked the varied characters and your poetic and almost lyrical style of writing. I think if you continue working on this project, it can be a great novel!”

~ Leti Del Mar, 4 Feb 2014.

Even when the grammatical accuracy of your story is not yet on point, you should create a credible, memorable and thought-provoking story that grabs the reader's attention.

Authors' Curtilage Quote

The Difference between High & Soft Concept Stories

High concept stories are novels or movies that are packed with action. They have an impactful plot. Their unique stories are their selling point, more than the characters. Their premise is easy to pitch in a few sentences.

I remember I was forced to write a story like this during my final project in college.

Imagine a situation where you have to write a story with a unique bend. That's a high concept story.

Some films and novels that are high concept:

Inception (2010)

Jurassic Park (1993)

Liar Liar (1997)

Groundhog Day (1993)

Pleasantville (1998)

The Auction

The Midnight

The Naturals

A high concept story is what Hollywood producers want. It has a wide audience allure. Can you make your novel or screenplay a high concept one for the Nigerian producers or audience? If you are asking me this question, I imagine you want to write a landmark story, which can sell locally and on the global market. So, my answer to this question is unequivocal, "Yes." You can pack your novel or script with all the elements that must be present in a story for it to be high concept.

Unlike high concept stories, soft stories are built with great characters rather than action. They have intriguing situations that keep the reader absorbed as the story unfolds. Their authentic dialogues, which are set to accomplish a purpose, set something up, pay it off, and move the story forward is one of the keys to their success.

You don’t have to frame your story as a high concept. Most of my unpublished novels and scripts are soft stories with a bit of action. In 2008, I entered two of my screenplays in a competition in California. From logline, genre, format, depth of narrative, structure, hook, concept, premise, characterization, dialogue, trend and commercial potential – with a score of (1-10), I had 7.40, 7.5, 7 and 8 over 10. The only thing that made me drop out of the competition was that each stage required lots and lots of money for creative development. The grand prize was $200, 000. 00. There were other attractive wins for the other runner up as well. So, serious investment was required of the participants.

If you want to try your hand at high or soft concept novel writing or screenwriting, study similar works and you'd learn to craft these sorts of stories skillfully.

My Life At 40!

So, it’s my Ruby Jubilee. I’m 40 today! 4 decades! The young life turns into the mature one, and the new phase of life starts. This is huge, I sincerely must say. The Rock who begot me, I'm happy you've preserved my life. My Lord, my life, the length of my days. I thank you for not allowing the storms of life to swallow me up. I thank you for the journey thus far. I thank you for you shall go with me in this new phase of my life. I thank you for you shall not leave me nor forsake me.

I pray this milestone birthday brings an increase in happiness for me.

Life at 40 shall be blissful for me.

I shall enjoy comfort.

What’s missing shall be found.

The gaps shall be filled.

The excess shall be subtracted and my values, the things that give meaning and purpose in my life shall upsurge.

My life shall improve.⁣ The toxic circle shall fall by the wayside.

I shall lead a healthier life.⁣ I shall become wiser.⁣ I shall evolve significantly.

The rest of my life shall be the best of my life. My future shall be better than the past and the rest of my days shall reflect God more accurately, in Jesus name.

Happy 40th Birthday to ME.
